The Project

Prepare the wider site for future development of a 160,000 sq.ft Centre of Excellence, looking at how carbon can be reduced from the glass production process. This challenging brownfield site that was once a colliery before becoming a glassworks, has left a legacy of heavy metal concentrations together with glass and asbestos contamination.

What we did

Phase 1 works consisted of the site clearance and relict foundation removal; up to -6.5m and subsequent crushing to produce 6F2. It also involved TPH, heavy metal and VOC remediation, along with mine shaft capping of 17 tonnes of steel and 50m3 of concrete, followed by bulk earthworks. The site structures and soil were converted into capping stabilised stone to balance site, so no disposal nor import was required. Phase 2 included further mine shaft capping and the relict tank removal, soil re-engineering and construction of 350lm road access with provision of gas and electric installation and site substation.
