Ferroscan is a non-destructive testing method used to identify and locate reinforcing steel bars embedded within concrete.
The technique enables the position of reinforcement to be determined without damaging or breaking the concrete surface. It can also be used to measure the depth of concrete cover over the reinforcement and, where conditions permit, estimate the diameter of the reinforcing bars.
Ferroscan is particularly useful for assessing the arrangement and condition of reinforcement in existing concrete structures, especially where construction drawings are unavailable or need to be verified. The method is generally most effective for identifying reinforcement within the uppermost layer of concrete. Its accuracy can be influenced by factors such as the spacing and orientation of the bars, concrete thickness, the presence of multiple reinforcement layers, and other metallic objects embedded within or near the concrete.
